20,000 Leagues Under the Sea is a 1954 film produced by Walt Disney Productions. It was the studio's biggest live action film to date, their first science fiction film, and the only science fiction film produced in Walt Disney’s lifetime. Adapted from Jules Verne’s novel of the same name, it stars Kirk Douglas, James Mason, Paul Lukas, and Peter Lorre.
In the year 1868, after a series of ship attacks in the Pacific Ocean, Professor Pierre Arronax is asked to come aboard a ship to find out what it is. The alleged sea monster turned out to be a high tech submarine, far more advanced than anything of that era. After the vessel is sunk, Arronax, his assistant Conseil, and harpooner Ned Land are brought onboard the Nautilus, which is helmed by a mysterious man named Captain Nemo. They lived life under the sea, trying to escape back into humanity and learning more about the troubled and complicated captain in the process.
- Paul Lukas - Professor Pierre Arronax
- James Mason - Captain Nemo
- Kirk Douglas - Ned Land
- Peter Lorre - Conseil
In an alternate universe based on Verne’s other novels, Captain Nemo had a change of heart and opened up his base at Vulcania to humanity, allowing scientists to explore the depths of the ocean and the center of the Earth.
Sometime after the events of the film, Jason Chandler teamed up with Ned Land to find the remains of the Nautilus. Chandler rebuilt it, himself, and used it to continue Nemo’s work.
A painting of the Nautilus can be found at Grog Grotto at the Polynesian Resort. Tentacles from the giant squid are hanging from the ceiling, as well. There is also a photograph of Walt Disney holding one of the tentacles.
A newspaper talking about the 'sea monster' (the one that Professor Arronax was interviewed for before his departure in the film) can be found in a cabinet at the Enchanted Tiki Bar.
According to photographs at the bar, Trader Sam was a friend of Ned Land.
The Skipper Canteen
The Jungle Navigation Co. Ltd. Skipper Canteen features a book by Nemo, titled The Polar Voyage. The Nautilus can also be seen on a map made by Mary Oceaneer and Captain Brieux, being wrangled by the giant squid.
The pipe-organ within the ballroom of the Haunted Mansion in Disneyland is a recycled prop from both the film and original attraction, having once been Captain Nemo's organ from aboard the Nautilus. It is unknown if this connection is true in-lore as-well.
Many attractions at the Disney Parks have been inspired by the film, including 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea: Submarine Voyage at the Magic Kingdom and Les Mystères du Nautlius at Disneyland Paris.
