Atlantis: The Lost Empire is a 2001 animated film produced by Walt Disney Pictures. It was the 41st film in the Disney animated canon and its first science fiction film. Written by Tab Murphy and directed by Gary Trousdale and Kirk Wise, it stars Michael J. Fox, Cree Summer, James Garner, Leonard Nimoy, and many others in a large ensemble cast.

Many centuries ago, the city of Atlantis was destroyed by a large cataclysm, seemingly lost forever and falling into mythology. In 1914, cartographer and linguist Milo Thatch believed that it was real, and attempted unsuccessfully to be able to find it. His fortunes turned around, when he was approached by millionaire Preston B. Whitmore and asked to join an expedition to find the lost city. Rounded out by a cast of colorful characters, they set out to find Atlantis, eventually coming in contact with the Atlanteans. When other members of the expedition turn out to have ulterior motives, it's up to Milo and his friends to stop them and save the city.

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea[]

After an attack from a giant squid depletes their power, the Neptune submarines sink into a deep trench. There, they enter the ruins of the lost city, inhabited by humanoid sea creatures. Using glowing blue crystals, like the ones seen in the film, they help the submarines resurface and return safely to Vulcania.

Adventure Isle[]

A newspaper clipping on a board at Camp Discovery references the events of the film. In 1932, Preston B. Whitmore utilized the League of Adventurers to go public with what happened in the expedition for the first time.
