Captain Brieux is a supporting character from the 1974 Disney film The Island at the Top of the World, an adaptation of Ian Cameron’s novel The Lost Ones. He is an eccentric inventor, pilot, and captain of the Hyperion airship.

History[]

Film version[]

Captain Brieux built the Hyperion for a group of Americans, who backed out after he spent all of their money to build it. Sir Anthony Ross bought it for his voyage to the Arctic to find his son. During the trip, he was separated from the rest of the crew when the Hyperion was shot down, before being reunited with them after the fact. Once they escape the wrath of the warriors of Astragard, he left on foot with the rest of his new friends.

Brieux was an eccentric man, overconfident and daring. He flew the Hyperion in between a tight cavern and swung from his ship to fix a broken propeller. He had a few hairbrained schemes, such as abandoning the Hyperion’s gondola and propellers to fly out of the Bay of Whales. Ross once described him as “brave, but mad as a hatter”.

Appearances and allusions[]

Cafe Hyperion[]

Brieux’s ship is docked at this restaurant at Disneyland Paris' Discoveryland. The counter-service booths are designed to resemble ticket booths, with panels above advertising flights available on the Hyperion.

Discovery Bay[]

This unbuilt land would have contained a recreation of Brieux’s hangar, with the Hyperion jutting out of it. Brieux, himself, would have likely been invited to Discovery Bay by Jason Chandler as a guest inventor.

Skipper Canteen[]

Sometime after the events of the film, Brieux rebuilt the Hyperion and went on an expedition with Society of Explorers and Adventurers president Jason Chandler. They charted the legendary flying beasts of the Mekong River and surrounding areas. The map can be found on a wall in the secret S.E.A. meeting room.

Connections[]

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad[]

Jason Chandler is a character featured in Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, having assisted Barnabas T. Bullion with his mining of Big Thunder Mountain.

Sleeping Beauty[]

The map which Brieux made with Jason Chandler shows Maleficent in her dragon form in Northern India.[1]

Trivia[]

  • Due to his having assisted S.E.A. in aerial-cartography, some have theorized Brieux to have been a member of the Society of Explorers and Adventurers.
