Kraken Reef is a location in the 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea attraction of the Mysterious Island.

Description[]

Kraken Reef is a reef in the Pacific Island found along a trench which would later be named, "Lucifer's Trench". The Reef was particularly infamous for being a ship's graveyard, holding doomed vessels and the remains of skeletons from many different centuries. The reef also held an enormous Giant Squid which might very likely be the reef's namesake and reason behind the sheer amount of ships which were wrecked in it.

Wrecks[]

  • La Belle Poule: (French: The Beautiful Chicken) was wrecked circa 1677.
  • The Leviathan: A hybrid steam/sailing ship which was wrecked in 1848, named for the legendary Abrahamic beast.
  • The Meteor: Wrecked in 1815.
  • La Santa Callorina: Wrecked circa 1483.
  • Unknown Galleon: Wrecked circa 1550.

History[]

Kraken Reef was seemingly discovered by 19th century submariner Captain Nemo aboard his vessel The Nautilus. He began observing, noting and mapping it on December 8th, 1869 and seemingly finalized this endeavour on the August 12 of 1870.[1]

Connections[]

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea[]

Kraken Reef is the apparent home of the Giant Squid or, "Devil Fish" from 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and is explored by several characters from the book.

Pirates of the Caribbean[]

The reef's namesake is the Kraken, a legendary-creature of Scandinavian origin which comes from historic misidentifications of the Giant Squid. The Kraken itself was heavily featured in the Pirates of the Caribbean film-series as the pet of Davy Jones and as being summoned by his ship the Flying Dutchman. The Kraken has also been referenced in the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction where a map of the isle Isla Tesoro has, "Beware the kraken" written in along its coast.
