Rongo or Rongo-mā-Tāne is a Polynesian deity featured in Walt Disney's Enchanted Tiki Room.

History[]

Mythology[]

Rongo is a Māori deity affiliated as being God of Agriculture and God of War. Certain Polynesian cultures would make offerings of cooked vegetables and human sacrifice in-order to gain his favour. He was the twin-brother of the sea god Tangaroa who joined forces to separate their parents the day and night to allow for time to pass.

In addition to being the god of Agriculture, Rongo had a love for flying kites. Rongo's kite flying allowed him to discover electricity.

Rongo appears in the greenery of this Walt Disney World resort.

In the Skipper Canteen is a book titled Rongo's Rite by one Tiki Kiki Serbano.[1]

Trader Sam's[]

Pele, Ngendei, Koro and Rongo all serve as bar-taps in Trader Sam's Enchanted Tiki Bar and Trader Sam's Grog Grotto. He is also the namesake for the, "Rongo Salad" menu item.[2]

Walt Disney's Enchanted Tiki Room[]

Rongo is one of the gods in the pre-show of this attraction in Disneyland. He has fruits in his head-piece and is shown flying a kite.
