Colonel Nedley J. Lostmore, better known as Shrunken Ned, is a fortune-telling shrunken head in Adventureland at Disneyland. He is the "Jungle's Only Self-Service Witch Doctor".

History[]

Disney Parks[]

Nedley Lostmore was an English colonel in the 19th century who travelled to the jungle where he would come to be decapitated and turned into a shrunken head. However, Ned c animate through presumably supernatural means which earned him the nickname of, "Shrunken Ned".

By the 1930s he'd be affiliated with the Jungle Expedition Skipper Training School and assisted in the training of new skippers for the Jungle Navigation Company. He would also go on to become the jungle's only self-service witch-doctor who provided (questionable) treatment for those in the jungle.

Alternate versions[]

Tales from Adventureland[]

In these books, Nedley J. Lostmore was a member of the Jungle Explorers' Society, a secret society of adventurers. He had many associates and colleagues throughout his life, including conjoined assassins and mimes.

He was the society's keymaster, tasked with protecting artifacts and keeping them hidden from the rest of the world. Eventually, he was caught in an ambush by Bungalow Bob, who turned him into a shrunken head. While some believed this attack was fatal, he survived and appointed his grandson, Andy Stanley, to continue being the keymaster in his place.

Appearances and allusions[]

Adventure Trading Company[]

Reporter Tallahassee Glover of the Daily Gnus newspaper interviewed Ned to get his thoughts on the Treehouse Juju and petroglyphs at the base of Tarzan's treehouse. Ned remembered that he used to have one of the jujus, before. He wore it around his neck, but he couldn't do so any longer for obvious reasons.

Bengal Barbecue[]

Ned can be found at this Disneyland restaurant in Adventureland, having previously sat in the South Sea Traders shop. He gives inaccurate and nonsensical medical advice, diagnosing strange diseases with stranger treatment. Each turn comes with a fortune card with the treatment printed on the front and Ned's head printed on the back.

Shrunken Ned's Junior Jungle Boats[]

Ned was the namesake of a boat game at the Magic Kingdom's Adventureland, called Shrunken Ned's Junior Jungle Boats. This was the first occurrence of Ned's namesake with the attraction being themed to a Jungle Navigation Co. training operation for potential skippers (in the form of children).

Skipper Canteen[]

Ned can occasionally be heard within the Skipper Canteen's mess-hall audio-loop. One of Nedley's prescriptions is also pinned to a bulletin board within said mess hall.[1]

Trader Sam's[]

Trader Sam's Enchanted Tiki Bar[]

Shrunken Ned's services are advertised in a newspaper which also features an article on tourists going missing in the Temple of the Forbidden Eye.[2]. This likely meaning that the newspaper was published in 1936 when Indiana Jones Adventure: Temple of the Forbidden Eye transpired.

Trader Sam's Grog Grotto[]

A small carving of Shrunken Ned's head can be found on a shelf in this bar.

Tales from Adventureland[]

Ned is a major character in the book series, first seen in The Keymaster's Quest. He recruited his grandson, Andy Stanley, to become the Jungle Explorers' Society's keymaster in his stead, after leaving clues and puzzles in his mansion for him to solve. He tasked him to find the rest of the keys, before the Collective found them first and used them to wake an evil Tiki god. Ned continued to play a major role in the remaining two books, using his butler, Boltenhouse, as a mechanical body.
